If we can operate the Renard mine, it’s also thanks to our host communities, with whom we have established open communications and a mutually beneficial climate of collaboration. Here are just a few examples.

Our host communities offer an attractive, dynamic and friendly living environment, where it’s easy to grow professionally and personally. Stornoway provides support to its employees who wish to become residents of Chapais and Chibougamau.
WE HAVE MADE TANGIBLE COMMITMENTS
TO MEET CURRENT AND FUTURE NEEDS.
In July 2012, we signed the Partnership Declaration with the host communities of Chapais and Chibougamau.
This declaration aims to respond to needs and initiatives of mutual interest, such as the sustainable and responsible development of the Renard project, communications, employment creation, economic and social development, and attracting newcomers to the region.
In March 2012, we signed the Mecheshoo Agreement with the Cree Nation of Mistissini, the Grand Council of the Crees (Eeyou Istchee) and the Cree Regional Authority, now called the Cree Nation Government.
This agreement governs the long-term relationship between Stornoway and the Cree communities for the duration of the Renard project. The agreement provides training, employment and business opportunities for the Crees. It also establishes the social, cultural and environmental values to which Stornoway must adhere, as well as a mechanism by which the Cree parties will financially benefit from the success of the Renard mine project.
We’re grateful for the communities that Stornoway calls home. This is why we support various organizations through sponsorships and donations. For example:
- Scholarships program to encourage school attendance by young Mistissini students.
- Excel scholarships to support high school graduates who have distinguished themselves through their academic achievements and community involvement
- Partner member of the Chibougamau Chapais Chamber of Commerce.
